My contest entry for
's Species of the Week contest, which for this week is a lemur.
To be honest, I didn't set out to create the most stunningly original character on earth. I wanted a character that I could still use when the contest was over, and would fit in with some of my other characters.
This is all the info I have for now; I'll add the rest as and when I come up with it. I know it's a bit crap, but it's the best I could come up with in a pinch. Basic Info:Name:

Yannick Descoteaux was born and raised on the isolated island of Montvellieu, located in the far southern Endara Ocean. A small and out of the way place, what initially attracted mainland interest back in 1576 were the large deposits of gold, gemstones and other exotic goods. During the next 211 years the island has been occupied by the Verulians and the Albeans, each claiming sovereignty over the island, and to this day the island still remains a hotly disputed territory.
Yannick's family were a relatively prosperous family of farmers. Yannick lived a happy, carefree existence in the remote northern village of Cape Luxada, where many long, hot days were spent playing with his friends and siblings in the vast forests of the island, as well as causing considerable mischief in the village itself! But there was always one day that he looked forward to the most. Every month his father would take Yannick and his siblings down to Port Lune, the capital of Montvellieu to sell his goods at the market. Yannick loved these days out, and quickly became enamoured with the foreigners. He was excited by their food and their clothes, but most of all, he was excited by the stories told to him by the foreigners, telling him of lands beyond the island he had always known; tales of snow-capped mountains and searing deserts, of vast cities and floating islands. A bright and curious child, the more Yannick heard these tales, the less he wished to follow in his father's footsteps and become a farmer, or go to work in the gold mines. He wished to get out and see the world.
Initially his parents were not pleased to hear of his ambitions; they wanted him to continue running the farm when they grew old and infirm, but Yannick would not be moved on the issue. There were many fights and arguments on the subject, until eventually his parents accepted that there was no way that they could stop him. Before he left his father gave Yannick the spear that had belonged to his great-grandfather, who had been a great warrior in his time, and told Yannick to make the family proud. To this day Yannick has always kept that spear, even with the introduction of firearms and other mainland weapons to the island.
Yannick joined the Albean Army in 1786 when he was only fifteen, and with his superb local knowledge became a scout for the newcomers. Using his superb natural agility and climbing abilities, Yannick travelled through the forest swiftly and easily, scouting the landscape and keeping track of enemy movements, providing valuable intelligence for the military command to use. He would send a portion of his pay back to his family in Cape Luxada, while saving what little money he could towards realising his greatest ambition; passage to the mainland. For Yannick at that point, life was good.
Tensions between Verulia and Albea began escalating in the mid-1780s over the sovereignty of Montvellieu. Verulia claimed ownership of the island, having discovered it first, while Albea claimed that they had occupied it for longer. In reality both kingdoms only wanted the island for its fantastic array of natural resources. The issue became increasingly heated, and it seemed inevitable that war was going to break out. In 1788 the HMS Finerre
docked at Port Lune. Captain Alric Marriner
had been sent here, as part of the fleet lead by Admiral Greyson. Also on board was Captain Warrick Beckett
and soldiers of the King's Regiment. The official line is that they had been sent to deal with with the pirates that had been plaguing merchant ships in the area, as well as the Fossa population in the south of the island, who were said to be have formed an alliance with the Verulians. But in reality they had been sent to bolster the forces there in a show of strength against the Verulia.
For Yannick, life was about to become extremely interesting... (to be continued...)Random Information:
