My contest entry for
's Species of the Week contest, which for this week is freestyle.
I won't be winning points for originality, to be sure, but I saw this as a good opportunity to continue with the story started by Yannick. Who knows, I might even make it this year's NaNoWriMo! And seeing as this is the last one for the year, I can slip back into complete hibernation again Basic Info:Name:

Of all the peoples that lived on the distant island of Montvellieu, the Fossa were the ones to be feared. No animal was safe from from their stealthy approach through the trees and excellent command of magic, and people feared becoming the latest victim of a Fossa attack. When the Verulians discovered Montvellieu in 1576, the natives had been pretty much left to their own devices, but that all changed when the Albeans occupied the island. With their superior weaponry and numbers, the Albeans increased their control over the island, and imposed their laws on the land. Many, such as the Lemurs, accepted Albean rule and protection. But the Fossa rejected the Albeans and fought back against the occupiers instead. At first the Fossa held the advantage, with their command of magic ( practice more or less eradicated on the mainland) and superior knowledge of the island, but when the Albeans enlisted the aid of the natives and increased troop numbers, the tide turned in their favour.
Mahaut was born in 1758 in the southern town of Taubourg, in the far south of the island where the Fossa still retained territory. Growing up, Mahaut steadily grew to despise the occupiers, seeing them as murderers, looters and pillagers who only wished to destroy the landscape, strip the land of its natural resources and drive her people to extinction. She especially despised the Lemurs, feeling that they had betrayed the land to stand with the Albeans for short-term, materialistic gain. As soon as she was old enough she took up the sword against the occupiers, against the wishes of the tribe elders, and rallied the remaining warriors against the Albeans, making significant gains and becoming a real thorn in their side in the process. But it came at the cost of the gradual loss of her friends and family. It was a heavy price to pay, but it only served to make Mahaut even more determined to drive the occupiers from her land and return her people to their former glory.
But despite their best efforts, the Fossa were steadily forced back by the Albeans, and it seemed that the Fossa numbers and territory was dwindling by the day.
Until one day in 1788, when ships from the mainland kingdom of Verulia arrived. Verulian soldiers, lead by a fox referring to himself as the Baron, arrived in the village, offering his assistance in forcing back the Albean forces and returning the island to the people. Mahaut was suspicious of the stranger's true intentions, but even she had to admit that the Fossa needed all the help they could get in repelling the occupiers. She and the remaining Fossa formed an alliance with the Verulians, just as Albean reinforcements arrived on the island...
